Brooke’s Top 5 of All Time

Gastronomic Experiences
This encompasses both dining out and cooking. Being raised in a gastronomically-oriented family, I always devoured the issues of Food & Wine, Bon Appétit, Saveur, and Gourmet that rolled in with the mail. I follow food trends, I read cookbooks as if they were novels, and “celebrity” chefs such as Jamie Oliver and Rick Bayless are household names in the Everett abode.

My favorite dish to cook is baked cod with capers, white wine, onions, and fresh parsley. If I had to pick an absolute favorite restaurant, I’d consider where I could eat every day and never tire of the food…so the winner is José’s Tacquería at 10th and Spring Garden. Since I also have such a voracious sweet tooth, best dessert title goes to the gelato at Capogiro at 13th and Sansom.

Live Music
When I was eleven years old, my parents took me to see Keith Richards and the X-pensive Winos at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA. I was wowed and hooked. Since then, I’ve been to hundreds of concerts of every genre. I’ve even attended them from an industry perspective, working as a stage hand at the Bryce Jordan Center at Penn State. I’m a lean, mean, cable-coiling machine.

Travel
So far, I’ve visited Mexico, Belize, Jamaica, Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Turkey, and the Netherlands. The time I spent in Oaxaca, Mexico completing fieldwork for my honors thesis was one of the most enriching experiences I’ve had. The rolling green mountains seem to impart wisdom to those who admire them. I’ve been to Mexico a total of five times, and I’m itching to go back, as well as check out some new places. I think South America should be my next destination.

* Note: Whenever I can combine items 1 through 3, I’m in heaven.

Speaking Spanish
This can frequently go hand-in-hand with items 1 and 3, and often makes them more fun. I’m a big fan of the telenovelas on Telemundo, even though my boyfriend always mumbles, “Can we please watch something I can understand?”

Non-human Primates
My nickname has always been “monkey,” perhaps because I spent a good amount of time in a tree during my childhood. Being an anthropology major at Penn State, I had the opportunity to learn about their social tendencies and habits. My visit to Belize was largely based on the fact that I would have the opportunity to spot spider monkeys and howler monkeys in their natural habitats.

Especially exciting is my honors thesis and images from Santa Ana del Valle in Oaxaca, Mexico. I visited here for three weeks in June, 2003 researching for my Penn State University Schreyer Honors College thesis.

I recently received second place in the PSU Education Abroad photography contest.

In May, 2003 I was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa Penn State Chapter
